Adoptive Parenting Class

Florida Statutes and USCIS require documentation of counseling and education for all adoptive parents. This class is geared toward meeting the needs of families who are adopting out of country relatives or children who have been known to them for some time and will cover the following topics.

• Parental commitment and ensuring a safe and secure home base for the child
• Parental expectations, the meaning of adoption, and self-esteem issues
• Welcoming an older child into the family and building the bonds of attachment
• Language and communication, school adjustment, socialization and peer influences
• Dealing with loss and grief and maintaining family and cultural connections
• Behavior management techniques, guiding your child toward wise choices
• Questions and Answers and Interactive Discussion
• When you should seek professional help and what community resources are available

The four hour class will be held from 1-5 p.m. on

Dr. Lani Kaskel, Ph.D., discussed the kinds of psychoeducational tests that adoptive parents should specifically know about. She also addressed testing for behavioral issues, academic/learning issues, testing for gifted and autistic spectrum testing.
